NEWS & EVENTS 2007

2007 was an exciting year – especially for art deco enthusiasts, with Melbourne's hosting of the World Congress on Art Deco. Some other highlights of our walks and talks:

A Night at the Pictures
October

Moving pictures were a part of Sydney life as early as 1894 but the golden age of cinema architecture only began in 1909, culminating in the movie palaces of the 1920s and the sleek streamlined theatres of the 1930s and 1940s.

The Society’s president, Roy Lumby, discussed the architecture of this most popular form of entertainment in terms of its social and aesthetic context, supported by a rich array of images.

August: Tulkiyan and Eryldene
Rarely does a house survive for more than ninety years without major and sometimes destructive change taking place. The survival of domestic gardens is even less common.

The Society had a rare opportunity to visit two very different homes that were built just before World War I and designed by two of the most respected architects of the era, Bertram Waterhouse and William Hardy Wilson – “Tulkiyan” and “Eryldene”.

Both are outstanding exemplars of early twentieth century domestic architecture with original interiors and, in the case of “Eryldene”, an extraordinary and very beautiful garden.

May : Fantastic Plastic!
Hardly any object captures the spirit and the style of the middle third of the twentieth century like bakelite (and other plastic) radio receivers. Here advanced communications technology came into everyone’s home via up to the minute Art Deco design.
It was a memorable evening at the Power House Museum when Dr Peter Sheridan, authority and collector, shared his passion for these most marvellous manifestations of commercial twentieth century style.

April: the Ninth World Congress on Art Deco, Melbourne.
This exciting event was presented by the Art Deco Society of Victoria. Lovers of art deco from around the globe gathered for presentations by experts, tours of Melbourne's deco highlights, and social events.

April: Pre-Congress program, Canberra.
In the days leading up to the Congress, we presented walks and talks in Canberra, Australia's national capital. The group saw some superb art deco, as well as a wide range of other architectural styles.

April: Art Deco Tour of Ku-ring-gai.

On April 1st, we spent a leisurely and information-packed tour exploring the localities rich and diverse heritage items of significance both of the architectural and natural realm.
This very special tour included such treasures as: a superb Functionalist style house, the Killara Golf Club which features extensive Art Deco ornamentation, Dormie House, and ‘MAHRATTA’ the 1941 house designed by Architect Douglas Agnew, followed by a guided tour by the Friends of the Blue Gum High Forest at St. Ives.
